How Energy Converter Works

The joule is the SI base unit for energy that every other unit is converted through. A calorie equals exactly 4.184 joules, and a kilowatt-hour — the unit your electricity bill is measured in — equals 3,600,000 joules. Your input is multiplied by its own factor to get joules, then divided by each other unit's factor to fill out the full set of results.

Example

Helpful Tips

  • Nutrition labels usually say "calories" but actually mean kilocalories (1 kcal = 1,000 cal) — this converter keeps the two separate so you can convert whichever one you actually have.
  • Electricity usage and appliance ratings are typically shown in watt-hours or kilowatt-hours, while heating and cooling systems (like air conditioners) are often rated in BTU.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a food "calorie" the same as the calorie in this converter?
No — food labels use "Calorie" (capital C) to mean kilocalorie, 1,000 small calories. Use the kilocalorie option for nutrition figures, and the calorie option only if you specifically have a small-calorie (cal) value.
What is a BTU used for?
A British Thermal Unit (BTU) is common in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) specifications — for example, an air conditioner's cooling capacity is often listed in BTU per hour. One BTU equals about 1,055.06 joules.
How does this relate to my electricity bill?
Utility bills charge per kilowatt-hour (kWh), which is the energy used by a 1,000-watt device running for one hour — equal to exactly 3,600,000 joules. Converting other energy units to kWh shows roughly how they'd compare on a bill.
Why is the joule the base unit instead of the calorie?
The joule is the SI (International System of Units) unit of energy, so using it as the common reference point keeps the conversions between all the other units mathematically consistent.
