How Temperature Converter Works

Unlike most conversions, temperature scales don't share a common zero point, so a simple multiplier won't work — instead each scale needs its own formula. Fahrenheit is derived from Celsius with F = C × 9/5 + 32, and Kelvin is simply Celsius shifted by a fixed offset, K = C + 273.15, because a kelvin and a degree Celsius are the same size. Whatever scale you enter in, the tool first converts it to Celsius internally, then applies both formulas to get the other two.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't temperature just be multiplied like other units?
Because Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin have different zero points as well as different-sized degrees, converting between them requires an offset in addition to a scaling factor — that's why the tool uses formulas like F = C × 9/5 + 32 rather than a single multiplier.
Why does the tool reject some Kelvin or Celsius values?
Kelvin cannot go below 0 (absolute zero), which corresponds to -273.15°C and -459.67°F. Entering a value below that limit in any scale isn't physically possible, so the tool shows an error instead of a result.
What's the difference between a degree Celsius and a kelvin?
