How Length Converter Works
Every length unit is first converted to meters, the base unit, by multiplying by a fixed factor — for example 1 inch equals 0.0254 meters and 1 mile equals 1,609.344 meters. That meter value is then divided by each target unit's own factor, so all eight conversions are produced from a single input in one pass.
How to Use This Tool
- Type the number you want to convert into the value field.
- Choose the unit that number is currently in from the dropdown.
- Read the converted value for every other length unit in the results box below — it updates as you type.
- Select Reset to clear the field and start over.
Example
Converting 10 miles: 10 × 1,609.344 = 16,093.44 meters, which is exactly 52,800 feet (16,093.44 ÷ 0.3048) and 16.09344 kilometers (16,093.44 ÷ 1,000).
Helpful Tips
- For everyday distances (walking, running) meters and kilometers are usually clearest; for road trips, miles and kilometers are the standard pair to compare.
- Construction and DIY measurements often mix inches and feet — the results box shows both at once so you don't need to convert twice.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the base unit used for length conversions?
The meter. Every unit is converted to meters first, then from meters to whichever unit you want to see — this keeps the math consistent no matter which unit you start from.
Are these exact conversion factors?
Yes. Metric units use exact powers of ten, and the imperial factors (inch = 0.0254 m, mile = 1,609.344 m) are the internationally agreed exact definitions, not rounded approximations.
Why do kilometers and miles show more decimal places?
Larger units represent bigger real-world distances, so small rounding differences become more visible. The tool shows extra decimals on those units to keep the conversion accurate.
Can I convert in the other direction, like feet to meters?
Yes — just change the unit dropdown to feet and enter your value; meters (and every other unit) will be calculated for you automatically.
