How Tip Calculator Works

The tip is the bill amount multiplied by the tip percentage. Adding that to the bill gives the total, and dividing the total by the number of people splitting it gives the amount each person owes.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter the bill amount before tip.
  2. Enter the tip percentage you want to leave.
  3. Enter how many people are splitting the bill (use 1 if you're not splitting).
  4. Select Calculate to see the tip, total, and per-person amount.

Example

An $85.00 bill with an 18% tip comes to $15.30 in tip, for a total of $100.30. Split four ways, that's $25.08 per person.

Helpful Tips

  • Common tip percentages are 15% for adequate service, 18-20% for good service, and 20%+ for excellent service — adjust to your local norms.
  • For an easy mental estimate, 10% of a bill is just moving the decimal point one place left; double it for 20%.
  • If your group wants to round the per-person amount up to a whole number, do so after seeing the exact split so everyone still covers their share.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the tip get split before or after dividing by the number of people?
The tip is added to the bill first to get the total, and that combined total is then divided evenly by the number of people.
What if I want to tip on top of tax?
Enter the bill amount including tax if you want the tip calculated on the post-tax total, or exclude tax if you prefer to tip only on the pre-tax amount.
Can I split a bill unevenly between people?
This calculator assumes an even split. For uneven splits, calculate each person's share of the bill separately, then apply the same tip percentage to each.
What tip percentage should I use?
It varies by country and service type — this tool doesn't set a recommendation, just the math once you've decided on a rate.
