How GPA Calculator Works
Each letter grade is converted to grade points on a 4.0 scale (A = 4.0 down to F = 0.0). Each course's grade points are multiplied by its credit hours, those products are summed, and the total is divided by the sum of all credit hours to give the weighted average — your GPA.
How to Use This Tool
- For each course, select its letter grade and enter its credit hours.
- Select + Add course to add more rows as needed.
- Select Calculate GPA to see your overall grade point average.
Example
Course A: A grade (4.0), 3 credits. Course B: B+ grade (3.3), 4 credits. Course C: C grade (2.0), 2 credits. Weighted total = (4.0×3) + (3.3×4) + (2.0×2) = 29.2, divided by 9 total credits = 3.24 GPA.
Helpful Tips
- Credit hours act as weights — a 4-credit course affects your GPA twice as much as a 2-credit course with the same grade.
- Remove a row with its Remove button if you added a course by mistake or want to test a different combination.
- This uses a standard unweighted 4.0 scale; some schools use a 5.0 scale for honors or AP courses, which this tool doesn't replicate.
Frequently Asked Questions
What grade point values does this use?
A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, F = 0.0 — the standard unweighted 4.0 scale.
How many courses can I add?
As many as you need — select "+ Add course" to add another row for each additional class.
What if I enter 0 credit hours for every course?
The calculator will show an error, since GPA requires dividing by total credit hours, which can't be zero.
Does this match my school's official GPA calculation?
It uses the common 4.0 unweighted scale. Some institutions use weighted scales or plus/minus variations, so check your school's specific policy if you need an official figure.
