How Countdown Timer Works
Once started, the tool re-reads your device's clock every second and subtracts it from the target date and time you chose. That remaining span of time is then broken down into whole days, hours, minutes and seconds by successive division, so the numbers you see always add up to the exact time left.
How to Use This Tool
- Choose the date and time you want to count down to.
- Select Start Countdown to begin the live timer.
- Watch the days, hours, minutes and seconds tick down automatically.
- Select Start Countdown again at any time to retarget it to a new date, or Reset to clear it.
Example
If you set the countdown to 31 December 2026, 11:59 PM and load the page at noon on 20 August 2026, the timer starts at 133 days, 11 hours, 59 minutes remaining and counts down every second from there.
Helpful Tips
- The countdown keeps running as long as the tab stays open — it does not need to be refreshed.
- Selecting Start Countdown again with a new date swaps the target instantly, without needing to reset first.
- Use it for deadlines, launches, exams or any event where you want a live sense of how much time is left.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the countdown keep running if I switch tabs?
Yes. The timer is driven by your device's clock, so it stays accurate even if the browser tab is in the background; the display simply catches up when you return to it.
What happens when the countdown reaches zero?
The tool shows "Countdown complete!" and stops updating automatically once the target date and time have passed.
Can I count down to a time in a different time zone?
The date and time you enter are treated as your device's local time zone. If you need another zone, convert it first with a time zone converter.
Will the countdown survive a page reload?
No — reloading the page clears the timer, since nothing is saved to a server. Simply re-enter the target date to restart it.
This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your input is not uploaded to any server.
